Great Bass Lines and Bass Songs

As many of you know by now, I really love the bass guitar. My true love for bass goes back to when I was just a child. It didn't take any time to realize that most of my favorite songs had great memorable bass lines. There was definitely a connection. That's what made me want to pick up the bass in the first place. When my uncle Jermaine found out I was starting to learn the bass, he gave me his Gold Fender Jazz Bass. Not only was it beautiful, but it sounded and played great. I still enjoy using it today. By the way, who's my favorite bassist of all time? Besides my uncle Jermaine :-) of course, it has to be Paul McCartney. The bass lines he creates and plays are so melodic and memorable. It's been one of my dreams to learn how to play like him.

So what are some of my favorite bass lines?

Let's do Jackson family first...

  • I Want You Back
  • Petals
  • Sugar Daddy
  • Smooth Criminal
  • Billie Jean
  • Can you feel it
  • Shake your body
  • Thriller
  • You Want This

Next up, Paul Simon...

  • You Can Call Me Al
  • Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes

How about a little Queen...

  • Under Pressure
  • Another One Bites The Dust

And my favorite... Paul McCartney

  • With A Little Help From My Friends
  • Something
  • Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite

I also LOVE the "walking" bass style he uses in...

  • All My Loving
  • Penny Lane

Here are the rest of them in no particular order....

  • Everyday I Write the Book (Elvis Costello)
  • Lovely Day (Bill Withers)
  • Take A Walk On The Wild Side (Lou Reed)
  • Super Freak (Rick James)
  • The Joker (Steve Miller Band)
  • Rock the Boat (Hues Corporation)
  • Video Killed The Radio Star (Buggles)
  • Back On The Chain Gang (Pretenders)
  • I Love the Nightlife (Alicia Bridges)

Did I miss any? What are some of your favorites?

Hi Taj,

nice to hear something from you. I know exactly what you mean. A bassline in a song can be the greatest part of a the whole song.

In holland weve got a dutch rockband called Kane. They've got one song, wich start with a great bassline. The bassline is mysterious and as crowd you get the energie of the bass.
I don't know if you like rockmusic but this bassline is great!
Here you can see the live performance of Waiting Waiting including bass :-)

Why did it take so long before you write another blog?

Cool topic Taj!!!

Well, you basically listed many of my fav songs...

How about Stevie Wonder, Superstition?? Basically it's just one bass note all the time but it kicks butt... Next song that pops into my head would be James Blunt, Simona. Really simple bass line too but it sure stands out...

Sheesh now that I try to remember a song nothing pops in my mind hehe... But it sure is the best to turn up the speakers and let the bass kick in...

Can you post a pic of that Fender??? Those are beautiful instruments...

Happy you are back on here dude!!! Hugs to ya!

Hey Taj,

Im loving ur interest in the bass guitar, it has such soul and personality involved (in my opinion that is, not that I would know anything about playing an instrument- only managed to play the recorder in my younger years, but I'm sure you dont have a clue of what that may be..lol)
Anyway, out of all ur chosen music list I am personally loving the jackson list ofcourse- not to be a cheesy Jackson fan or anything!!

All the best with the Bass Guitar love...

So you list made me think so much about all the music I like and I was kinda shockled at the song you listed as many of them are my fav for real...and not just coz they are your but becoz I truely do love them I love Queen and Paul McCartney (mayb coz I am English..lol) and of course the Jackson coz they are truely gr8 !! :)

I I went back and listen to all the songs in ur list that I alo enjoy listening to and I agree the bass is wonderful but I am really a words kinda person - I liove the music behind the song as thats what make it what it is but I love listening to the words and finding the meaning behind them...I did play music and write songs for a while when I was younger but now I just listen to the music. So thank you for allowin me to rediscover them music that I really enjoyed listening to and I was able to share it with my cousin who is 16 and only think people like Soulja boy is the only music I should be listening to..I am like to her okay....lol !!

On a nother note I am currently folloein you on Twitter and would like if you would follow me, you can find me at http://twitter.com/Syna320

Hey Taj, how are you?

You gotta check out the music of Me'Shell NdegOcello, she's all about funk and bass! My favorites are her albums "Plantation Lullabies" (bass songs: Diggin' You Like an Old Sould Record, If That's Your Boyfriend He Wasn't Last Night) and "Peace Beyond Passion" (bass songs: Leviticus Faggot, Deuteronomy: Niggerman). Have a great day, take care

ok me again.

I went through my cds and here are some more songs and artists that knock me out my seat lol:

Again, Stevie Wonder... (There's a cd called Number 1s with all the "classics")... You should listen into Higher Ground and Signed, Sealed, Delivered. Not to forget "You haven't done nothing" with you know who ;)

I guess these are songs that you can also practice quite well.

Then: I hardly recommend Al Green. Maybe you just can pick random songs and listen. Gets me every time.

Not to forget Ika & Tina Turner...

Aerosmith. Turn up the speakers...

Also: Barry White. The voice was enough of a bass but dang is that smooth!

I could go on and on... Lol guess we have provided you with enough homework huh?

Hugs and happy playing! t

Hey Taj,

You finally made it back with an interesting topic ;-)
Didn't know that you played bass. I was intressted in playing when I was younger, but discovered my love for piano's. And that really was love at first sight.
Here are some of my favorites, some are even before our time. Used a lot of them for an intro for my radioshows. Since I grew up with Motown music and all... I totally loved the 80's and 90's, here we go!
Hope nobody will hold this against me. LOL!

James Brown - Make it Funky
Chic - Good Times (note that this one sounds just like another one bites the dust of Queen)
Lou Reed - Take A Walk On The Wild Side
The Four Tops - Bernadette
Isaac Hayes – Shaft
Stevie Wonder - Boogie On Reggae Woman
Supremes - Reflections
Bill Withers – Lovely Day
Police - Spirits in the Material World
Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way
Yes - Owner of a Lonely Heart
M/A/R/R/S – Pump Up the Volume
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Give It Away
Daft Punk - Around The World
Mr. Oizo – Flat Beat

Nuff said, right!?!
BTW still waiting for a photo in a certain T-shirt (remember your Paris trip?)
